“You’re awake by the way. You’re not having a terrible, terrible dream. Also, you’re not dead and you haven’t gone to hell. This is your life now. This is our election now. This is us. This is our country. It’s real.” This quote was spoken by Rachel Maddow, a television host on MSNBC, who vocalizes her response to Donald J. Trump being elected as president. Millions of people, even weeks later, are still speechless by the results of the 2016 presidential election. It’s extremely alarming to see minorities everywhere fearful for what Trump’s plans are for the future.
One group in particular that has been severely affected ever since Donald Trump has been elected as president is Muslims. On Twitter, Muslim Americans created an outlet, called “Day 1 In Trump’s America,” in which they posted numerous updates on their own personal experiences post-election.
Our society is changing, and it’s not for the better. Donald Trump is empowering people all across the country to spread hatred toward the Muslim community due to the things that he has said in the past. For instance, Trump has said that he would like to temporarily ban Muslim immigrants from entering the United States because he believes that there is a huge issue with terrorism today. Although I agree with the fact that there must be more security regarding the immigration process, I do not agree with specifically banning all Muslims from entering the country because most of them are not evil. There is no logical reason why Donald Trump should be singling out this specific group of people because there are radical groups in every religion.
Although America will never forget the September 11th, 2001 World Trade Center attack, we must respect Muslim faith and recognize that generalizing all Muslim people as being terrorists is utterly immoral. Muslims are not our enemy; they are peaceful people. Just as every other group of people in America have the right to practice any religion they please, so should Muslims because they deserve no different treatment. Muslim discrimination is simply unfair because there are billons of Muslims who are causing no harm in America and now have to deal with the inevitable consequences that are out of their control. Enough is enough.
Even though there has been such a negative influence since Donald Trump was elected president, we must not give up on trying to change the way that our country is acting right now. It is not acceptable for Muslims, let alone anybody, to feel unwelcome in a place where they should feel most welcomed. It is very apparent that there is still so much hatred in the United States, and it is time to stand united as one. This is not the end; it is just the beginning. Please, let’s make America great again.
