There is a lot of research out there about the benefits of consuming a plant based diet, so how do you do it? Well, there are a few different ways you can go about it. It is easy to view it as a dualistic diet, you either eat meat or you don’t; however, this does not have to be the case. Cutting meat out of every meal right away is not the best way to do it. It will be very easy to become discouraged if you make the transition too quickly because you won’t know what foods you like and don’t like in your new diet.
Start by taking small steps and customize the diet so it works for you, consume meat only once a day, or once every two days, or once a week. Use this time of transition to test out new recipes and foods so you know what to look for when preparing for your next meal. This gives you, and your body, a chance to become accustomed to making and eating this new style of meals.
Replacing omnivorous meals with plant based meals is essential during this transition so your body still gets the nutrients it needs. Your body may be unaccustomed to getting sustenance from only plant based foods, so it is important to introduce them gradually. It is important to balance what you are consuming as well. Vickie and Larissa talk about how to do this, as well as give some great suggestions for a plant based dinner, in their podcast titled: “Plant-Based Dinner Options.”
One of the most common misconceptions about consuming a plant based diet is that you will not consume enough protein to remain healthy. One of the ways that vegetarians and vegans get their daily recommended protein intake, which varies by age, is through nuts and seeds; “nuts and seeds are rich in vegetable oils, which pack nine calories per gram” (Plant-Based Diet) so adding a handful of nuts to your meal eliminates that concern. Nuts and seeds are a great source of protein and can add a nice crunch to almost any meal.
It is important to keep an open mind throughout the transition; it might take a few bad recipes to figure out what your palate craves in a plant based meal. Trying new foods may seem daunting at first, but there are tons of recipes out there to try. Variety is not something you should be worried about when it comes to plant based meals. YouTube even has a wonderful array of step by step videos for plant based recipes. You will start to be and feel healthier when consuming a plant based diet as long as you do it right; this is why it is important that you talk to your doctor and do your own research to make sure you are getting the right amount of nutrients your body needs.
