Has the influence of celebrities on Instagram changed the ideal body type for women? High fashion has always been in favor of the tall lean supermodel figure. The skinnier the more superior. Yet, now that Instagram has become the main and arguable most influential photo-sharing platforms, norms and ideals are evolving. Instead of stick skinny, we now want all of you to have thigh gaps while also having double D’s and a big booty. It’s all about the bass, bout that bass, right?
Kylie Jenner, the insta-famous 18-year-old celebrity known for her bright blue hair and plump injected lips, has taken social media by storm. She has been in the eye of the media since she was a child through her families’ reality TV show “Keeping Up with the Kardashians.” Her looks are quite unique. Although one may see her as the perfect example of the post-modern beauty, with a skinny waist and big boobs + big booty, she embodies much more.
One of Kylies’ greatest insecurities are her lips. In 2015, her looks drastically changed with the help of lip injections and plastic surgery. Yet sadly, Twitter and Vine contributed to the creation of the horrors of the #KylieJennerChallenge. The challenge is simple, you take a shot glass and suck into it in order to create a thick ring around your lips for the Kylie-esque lip effect. So many young girls tried the challenge and managed to look ridiculous and inflict self harm at the same time!
Though Jenner had never done the challenge herself, nor endorsed it, she certainly felt the lash back of those who disapproved of the far reaches of her social influence on youth and teen culture. Kids and teens were sent to the hospital when the glasses broke and shattered in their faces from the suctioning.
What most fail to gather from the #KylieJennerChallenge is that Kylie Jenner’s lips are simply a metaphor for the horribly unrealistic beauty standards that is generated by social media. We can look at Kylie and we can critique her on wearing too much makeup, wearing revealing clothing, and dyeing her hair crazy colors, etc. Yet, we need to realize she is a victim of the system herself. Why do girls wear makeup? Why do girls feel the need to lose weight? We are one in the same and all feel the same pressures. Kylie Jenner is just trying her best to please others because she has spent her entire life in the limelight.
One could even argue that this young 18-year-old quite accurately resembles the new trend of body positivity that is slowing but steadily taking over all the negative self hate and self harm. In an interview with Elle magazine, Kylie tells her fans how to deal with cyber-bullying and negative comments. If you look past all of her glamor you can see how in recent years she has slowly become a business woman as well. The Kylie Jenner Lip Kits that she has create is just another example of how she is growing, profiting-from, and overcoming her insecurities. Building a brand and making money off what you were bullied for? Now that’s impressive.
