The 2015 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is all about Kendall Jenner. Kendall Jenner is making her debut as Victoria’s Secret’s newest recruit along with her best friend Gigi Hadid. Of course, her debut comes with a huge following; after all, she is Kim Kardashian’s half-sister. She was also listed on Times list of most influential teens for 2015.
I, along with many other girls of my generation have watched Kendall Jenner grow up on the television show Keeping Up With the Kardashians.
The first episode aired back in October 2007 when Kendall was only 12 years old, and now Kendall is 20. Viewers have watched monumental moments of Kendall’s life; they have been able to celebrate Kendall’s Sweet 16, watch her get her license, and see her graduate high school. Kendall’s fanbase has idolized her every move. Kendall and younger sister Kylie even have their own fashion line. Now teenagers are able to dress in their style, making them feel that much closer to living like these two sisters.
Kendall’s Instagram has quite the following, with 42.9 million followers. She holds the record for most liked Instagram photo with 3.3 million likes, beating her sister Kim who previously held the record with 2.4 million likes. It is safe to say that she will be bringing a large audience to the airing of the VS Fashion Show on December 10th. Her public announcement that she would be walking down the catwalk in December received an astonishing 1,079,402 likes on Instagram.
Kendall Jenner’s anticipated appearance will create a lot of emotion among viewers. Emotions regarding Kendall Jenner from the preview of the show has already stirred up lots of feelings. Girls turned to Twitter to express their thoughts regarding the sneak peak they saw. The following tweets are just some of the tweets that I am sure are going to trend on twitter when the show airs:
It should be clear after reading those tweets just how disturbing the effects created by the VS Fashion Show really are. These girls have chosen to express how they feel about themselves as a result of the VS Fashion Show. We can only imagine what other girls may be thinking or doing in response to the show.
Victoria’s Secret’s advertisement of Kendall Jenner has a detrimental effect on girls. The girls are comparing their bodies to this model, and in result they are doing mental and physical damage to their bodies. Females are subconsciously effected by the show when they tune in to watch their idol walk the catwalk.
It is appalling how much control the media has on the minds of young adults. They advertise these models as if their bodies represent the body of an average female. The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show continues to influence unrealistic sociocultural norms of body image on females.
The average female is not genetically blessed with the Kardashian-Jenner genes. For Kendall Jenner is 5’10” but the average 20 year old is 5’4”. It is time for Victoria’s Secret to address this social problem.
